Distinction Hotels Join The Hotel Weka Recycling Program

Since 2019, Distinction Hotels has proudly participated in The Hotel Weka’s end to end recycling program with 1547 guest rooms throughout New Zealand recycling their used shampoo, conditioner and soap bottles saving them from landfill and turning them into a permanent product.

The Hotel Weka program is broken down into four simple steps.

First, the hotels’ housekeeping staff collect the part-used toiletry bottles and tubes and put them in the original cartons the new toiletries were supplied in, ensuring that products are reused as much as possible. The Hotel Weka then arranges collection of the cartons filled with the part-used bottles and tubes and transports the plastic waste to the processing facility. From there, the waste plastic is cleaned & ground into a consistent form ready for processing. The plastic is then remoulded into concrete reinforcing chairs made of 100% recycled plastic.

Reinforcing chairs are used to keep concrete reinforcing mesh accurately spaced. These are used in many concrete structures such as foundations for buildings and concrete paths. They could even end up in new hotels across New Zealand!
