The Dunedin Midwinter Carnival is an annual event which celebrates our local seasons. It takes place on the Saturday closest to the Winter Solstice (longest night of the year) in Dunedin's Octagon.
Part of the Puaka Matariki Festival, the Midwinter Carnival is New Zealand’s largest lantern procession and is well known for its lanterns, sculptures and spectacular costumes.
This year’s event will take place on Saturday 24 June 2017. The event starts at 5:30pm, at which time a live band, local foodstalls, a merry-go-round and other entertainment will be present. At 6pm the Carnival Procession starts. The procession involves approximately 1000 people, including local families who have made their own lanterns at workshops, giant lanterns, stilt-walkers, dancers, drummers and more! Following the procession there is a fireworks display and more music and food. This is a donation-entry event. Come along and enjoy!
